Sunset Celebration at BijBlauw in Willemstad, Curaçao

For couples dreaming of an unforgettable Caribbean wedding.

Planning a destination wedding is all about finding a place that feels like you. A place that makes you instantly breathe deeper, where the colours are richer, the sunsets slower, and the celebration feels effortless. For Joël & Lennard, that place turned out to be BijBlauw, one of Curaçao’s most beloved oceanfront wedding venues.

As a Curaçao wedding videographer, I’ve filmed love stories all around the island, but BijBlauw has something truly unique. With the sound of waves nearby and facing the sunset, it’s a venue where weddings feel intimate, unforced, and deeply present.

This September, I had the pleasure of filming the multi-day destination wedding of Joël & Lennard, an international couple whose story is just as layered as the island they chose to celebrate on. What unfolded over three days was not just a wedding, but a shared experience shaped by connection, culture, and the rhythm of Curaçao itself.

Why BijBlauw Is One of Curaçao’s Most Magical Wedding Venues

Located in the colourful district of Pietermaai, BijBlauw blends boutique elegance with the relaxed charm of island life. It’s a place where pastel-coloured houses meet dramatic ocean views, where every corner is photogenic, and where couples can host everything from a luxurious sunset ceremony to an unforgettable dinner under the stars.

Couples are drawn to BijBlauw because:

  • It offers a front-row seat to the Caribbean Sea
  • The venue feels intimate yet spacious, perfect for groups around 50–75 guests
  • It’s stylish without being formal
  • The stone pier faces the sunset directly, making it ideal for sunset ceremonies

From a filmmaking perspective, the venue works exceptionally well. The golden light hits the water just right, the wind adds movement to every frame, and the sound of the ocean subtly adding to the atmosphere of the day.

A Three-Day Love Story:
Lennard & Joël in Curaçao

Joël & Lennard’s celebration unfolded over three days, allowing everyone to arrive slowly, reconnect, and fully settle into island life before the wedding day itself.

A Multi-Day Destination Wedding in Curaçao

Wednesday – Beach Day with Friends
The multi-day celebration began with a relaxed beach day at Playa Kalki. No schedule, no pressure, just time together. Swimming, laughter, long conversations in the sand, and a refreshing drink to shake off the jetlag set the tone for the days ahead and gave everyone space to ease into the celebration.

Thursday – Welcome Drinks at St. Tropez
On Thursday evening guests gathered at St. Tropez, an oceanfront beach bar in Willemstad, for welcome drinks hosted by Joël’s mother. As the sun slowly set and the sky softened into shades of lavender, friends and family reconnected over cocktails.

Friday – The Wedding Day at BijBlauw

Couple Session (15:30)
Joël & Lennard’s photo and video session took place in the vibrant, character-filled streets of Willemstad. Surrounded by colorful pastel buildings, charming details, and the city’s unique atmosphere, their playful and natural connection came through beautifully on film.

Guest Arrival (17:30)
Guests arrived at BijBlauw as the light began to soften and the sea took on deeper shades of blue. The setting was intimate and welcoming, with the pier prepared for the ceremony ahead.

Sunset Ceremony (18:00)
The ceremony took place on the pier, with around 60 guests gathered above the water. Officiated by a close family friend, it was short, personal, and sincere. Joël & Lennard exchanged vows that balanced emotion and humor. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the light shifted. One of the most beautiful moments of the day.

Tip from the videographer: keep ceremonie guest numbers to around 50–60 to keep the space on the pier comfortable.

Walking Dinner & Celebration (19:00)
Following the ceremony, the evening flowed seamlessly into a walking dinner and celebration by the sea. The catering was provided by Touch of Taste, one of my personal favorite chefs on Curaçao, bringing an extra layer of quality and care to the celebration.

Live Music & Party
A live band set the tone for the night, keeping the dance floor full. One especially meaningful moment came when the singer performed a song in French, a subtle nod to Joël’s upbringing in France.

Macaron Tower
Instead of a traditional cake, Joël & Lennard chose a macaron tower. Colourful, playful, and perfectly in tune with the spirit of their wedding.

The Experience: More Than Just a Wedding

What made Joël & Lennard’s wedding so special was how it reflected who they are as a couple. They weren’t looking for a staged or overly structured day. Instead, they wanted moments to flow naturally and to celebrate without pressure. Curaçao allowed them to create that: the place where they first met, surrounded by the people they love, with the freedom to celebrate in their own way.

Throughout the day, their connection was constant: small touches during speeches, shared laughter, dancing, and subtle glances that showed their deep bond. Their international backgrounds blended seamlessly with the relaxed Caribbean setting, while Jewish traditions were incorporated naturally.

The multi-day setup gave everyone space to be present, spontaneous, and fully engaged. Moments that might have been lost in a single-day celebration were captured beautifully on film, letting Joël & Lennard relive their day exactly as it happened.

What Filming at BijBlauw Means For Your Wedding Story

From a filmmaking perspective, BijBlauw offers a unique combination of space, character, and light. The stone pier, the sea nearby, and the vibrant streets of Willemstad create natural frames for each moment.

For Joël & Lennard, capturing their day on film was especially valuable. Their connection showed itself in the smallest gestures, moments that can easily be missed but become central in a wedding film. The venue’s open layout, colorful surroundings, and perfect sunset positioning allowed these moments to shine naturally, telling their story authentically and beautifully.

Joël & Lennard said

“We absolutely love the highlight film, it perfectly captured our days on Curaçao, exactly as we experienced them. Ellen’s work made the whole experience even more special, both in the moment and now that we can relive it all. We’re genuinely grateful she was part of our day, or rather, our days.”
