How to Get a Wedding Film You’ll be Obsessed With

Hi, I’m Ellen, a destination wedding filmmaker.
Having witnessed so many wedding days firsthand,
I’ve seen what truly works (and what doesn’t)
I’m excited to share those insights with you!
For couples who want a wedding film that doesn’t interrupt their day, but remembers it.
Your wedding film should feel like you. Not like a staged production, not like something that could belong to anyone else. The films couples end up watching over and over again usually have one thing in common: they feel lively and real.
After filming so many weddings, I’ve noticed there are a few simple things that make a huge difference in how your wedding film turns out. None of them involve acting or performing. Actually, it’s pretty much the opposite.

Be yourself and stay present
The first secret? Just be you.
I know it’s easy to become a little hyper-aware when there’s a camera around. But the best wedding films happen when couples stop thinking about the camera altogether.
Focus on each other. Take in the moment. Laugh when something goes wrong. Hug your friends a little longer. Be fully present in the day instead of worrying about how it looks.
That’s when the magic happens.
A big part of this also comes down to how your videographer works. Personally, I film mostly from the background. I like to blend into the day so you can forget I’m even there. No constant directing, no staged moments, just capturing things as they naturally unfold.
Because those honest, unscripted moments are the ones that will mean the most years from now.

Choose a videographer who gets your vibe
Your wedding videographer will be around you for a big part of the day. So it really matters that you feel comfortable with them.
Style obviously plays a role, you want to love the way your film looks and feels. But personality and connection matter just as much.
That’s exactly why I always schedule a get-to-know session before moving forward with a couple. Not as a formal sales call, but simply to see if we click.
When there’s trust and a relaxed connection, couples naturally feel more at ease on camera. And that always shows in the final film.
The best wedding films come from comfort, trust, and a shared understanding of the kind of memories you want to hold onto.

Add layers to your story
One of the easiest ways to make your wedding film feel richer and more personal is by adding a few extra moments around the wedding day.
Think about things like:
- a relaxed couple shoot before the wedding
- personal home videos from your trip if it’s a destination wedding
- a welcome dinner or pre-wedding event
These little layers make your story feel deeper and more complete.
Personally, I think the welcome event is one of the most underrated moments to capture.
From a storytelling perspective, multi-day celebrations create a much richer wedding film. Your wedding isn’t just about saying “I do.” It’s about spending a few unforgettable days with the people you love most.
Those hugs when friends arrive. Casual conversations over drinks. Spontaneous speeches. The laughter before the big day even starts.
Those are the moments that make a film feel alive.

Never underestimate good audio
If there’s one technical thing that really transforms a wedding film, it’s audio.
Sound is everything.
Your vows. The emotion in your voices. Your parents’ speeches. The laughter during dinner. Even the small background sounds that bring a moment back to life.
Clear, emotional audio is what turns a beautiful video into something you can feel every time you watch it.
That’s why I pay a lot of attention to audio when filming and editing. Because those words and reactions are often the most powerful memories you’ll have from the day.

The real secret to a great wedding film
In the end, the best wedding films aren’t about perfect lighting, perfect posing, or perfectly planned moments.
They’re about real connection.
When you’re present, surrounded by people you love, and working with vendors who understand your vision, the story almost tells itself.
And those are the films couples keep coming back to, not just the week after their wedding, but years later.
